Duncan Campbell - Gorilla Arm

Duncan Campbell is an English guy who left London 6 years ago to become Barcelonés.

The three things that move him most right now are making awesome mobile apps, getting to the top of mountains, and having parties on his terrace with friends.

Q

You have an agency called Gorilla Arm?

DC

Gorilla Arm is a small app development agency which I founded almost 2 years ago. In that time we’ve grown into a small team of developers and designers making really awesome apps for iOS and Android. It probably sounds like a cliché, but we’re incredibly passionate about building elegant apps that make a difference to people’s lives.

Q

And... Why that name?

DC

Most people think “Gorilla Arm” is just another goofy design agency name. But actually it’s the name of a real problem people get when they use touchscreens for too long. Do you ever check your mobile phone in bed? After about 30 seconds, your arm feels like it weighs a tonne, because it’s not designed to be held in that position for too long. That effect is called Gorilla Arm.

Q

You’re now working on a new project called rtist. Can you tell us a bit more about it?

DC

Over the last few months we’ve been busy building rtist – a new platform for commissioning artwork. We rounded up a bunch of really talented artists, all ready to take one of your photos and make an artwork based on it. Not only do you get an amazing artwork which you can frame on your wall (or give as a gift) but you’re also helping artists support themselves financially and keep doing what they love doing the most – art. rtist is launching in the new few weeks for iPhone and iPad.

Passion for creation – especially in the face of problems like lack of experience or time or money – inspires me beyond belief.

Q

Which is the work that you´re most proud of?

DC

Over the last 3 years we have worked very closely with an awesome startup in the UK – Elvie – which has built an IoT device for helping women train their kegel muscles – mostly aimed at women who have recently given birth, but also suitable for anybody interested in keeping those muscles in shape. We designed and built a pair of apps for the Elvie team and are very proud to say that we’re helping thousands of women with this important health issue.

Q

What inspires you?

DC

I guess one thing that inspires me is the determination and passion that some people have to just go for it. Whether it’s some kid on Dribbble who is publishing some wireframes he has designed, or a group of people who give up their weekend to build an app, or someone blogging about their failure at running a startup. That passion for creation – especially in the face of problems like lack of experience or time or money – inspires me beyond belief.

Q

What's the best advice you can give to someone wanting to create an app?

DC

First up – get your idea out of your head and onto paper. It doesn’t matter how bad it looks – just get as much of it written/sketched down as you can. Then you need to find a developer and a designer. Here you have three choices – either do it yourself (if you’re able to, this is the best option), or pay for this (i.e. call Gorilla Arm haha) or take your idea on paper to a developer/designer meetup and start telling people you want help. The more info you have, the more serious you look, the more likely you are to find cofounders to help you make it happen.

Q

You're one of the oldest members in the Betafamily here in Barcelona. How did life in Beta influence in your professional and personal growth? What did you learn here?

DC

I joined Betahaus looking for a new place to work, and have found literally hundreds (I think about 250) new friends, as well as new colleagues, business partners and clients. There’s something amazing about this place – I don’t know what it is – but people here ooze creativity and talent. It’s also a whole lot of fun too.
